RACINE, WISCONSIN—Today, Bryan Steil joined members of the Racine County Sheriff’s Department for a ride along.

“Today, I saw firsthand the challenges our law enforcement face every day. The men and women of the Racine County Sheriff’s Department protect our community. I commend their work and am grateful for their service. We had thoughtful discussions on ways to strengthen Southeast Wisconsin and improve law enforcement-community relationships. I continue to make it a priority to listen, to learn, and to be a part of constructive dialogue. As our state and nation work towards a more perfect union, I am committed to being a part of the solution,” said Steil.

“I am proud of the elected officials who have agreed to see first-hand the challenges that our law enforcement officers face daily. Those that have participated have said it has been a positive experience which has given them a much better insight into understanding the unknown challenges that law enforcement face each and every call they respond to, oftentimes with little or no information,” said Racine County Sheriff Schmaling.

On background:

In 2019, Steil joined the Janesville and Racine Police Departments for ride alongs.

Steil is working with African American community leaders, law enforcement, and others to discuss police reform, racial injustice, and issues impacting Southeast Wisconsin. Following these conversations, Steil cosponsored the Just and Unifying Solutions to Invigorate Communities Everywhere (JUSTICE) Act. This bill increases de-escalation and duty to intervene training for police officers, ensures police departments retain only the best officers, and increases body camera usage.
