WASHINGTON, D.C.—Congressman Bryan Steil (WI-01) urged U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo to respond to Iran’s recent actions that continue its nuclear build-up and threaten our allies. Iran resumed enriching uranium up to 20 percent purity at its nuclear facility. The Iranian regime also seized a South Korean oil tanker, detaining the crew and vessel.

“As the Iranian regime continues its pursuit of a nuclear weapon, the United States must maintain our tough approach. Throughout the past four years, the Trump Administration has made great progress against the regime by enforcing sanctions and spearheading normalization agreements between Israel and the Arab world. In the weeks and months ahead, we cannot revert to flawed one-sided deals that enrich Iran’s leaders and support their nuclear capabilities. Just yesterday, it was reported that Iran is beginning to manufacture material for the core of nuclear warheads. The United States must work with our allies and respond to these clear threats. We cannot turn a blind eye to Iranian aggression,” said Steil.

You can read Steil’s letter to Secretary Pompeo here. In the letter, Steil writes: “We cannot tolerate these provocations. I urge you to respond to Iran’s recent actions with appropriate resolve and work with our allies to provide a united front against Iranian aggression.”

Over the summer, Steil penned an op-ed in the Washington Examiner on the need to continue working to enforce U.S. sanctions on Iran and why the Iranian regime must be held accountable during the global pandemic.
