Steil Demands Answers on HUD’s Role in the Migrant Crisis

January 29, 2024

Washington, D.C. (January 29, 2024) - Congressman Bryan Steil today called on Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) Secretary Marcia Fudge to provide transparency in the department’s handling of taxpayer funds. Specifically, how much, if any, funding is misused to provide public housing authorities (PHAs) to benefit undocumented immigrants.

The request follows a House Financial Services Committee hearing earlier this month where Rep. Steil asked Secretary Fudge how HUD is responding to the influx of migrants and if the department tracks the amount of taxpayer money being spent on housing illegal immigrants. The secretary said the department does not track how much taxpayer money is spent on housing for illegal migrants.

Below is an excerpt from the letter:

“As American families struggle to afford decent housing, it is essential that the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) assistance prioritizes U.S. citizens and is not diverted to migrants because of our failure to secure the border.”
