Steil Legislation to Block Financing for Hamas Signed into Law
WASHINGTON (April 24, 2024)- Congressman Bryan Steil (WI-01) today released a statement following the entirety of his legislation the End Financing for Hamas and State Sponsors of Terrorism Act (H.R. 6632) being signed into law. The law will disrupt the ability of Hamas to fund terrorism and violence by requiring the Secretary of the Treasury to work with U.S. allies in the Group of Seven (G7) to ensure Hamas is incapable of financing armed hostilities against Israel.
The law also requires the Treasury Department to submit to Congress an analysis of major financing sources to Hamas, a description of U.S. multilateral efforts to disrupt illicit financial flows to the group, and an evaluation of efforts to undermine Hamas’s ability to finance armed hostilities against Israel.
“During a time of war, terrorism, and instability in the Middle East, it is important to ensure sanctions are not only on the books but enforced to their fullest extent,” said Steil. “This law ensures we are using every tool in our toolbox to deny Hamas revenue to fund violent attacks targeting Israel, Jews, and American personnel throughout the Middle East.”
A portion of the End Financing for Hamas and State Sponsors of Terrorism Act was already signed into law last month. The law makes it harder for state sponsors of terrorism, like Iran, to abuse International Monetary Fund (IMF) resources to finance terrorist organizations, including Hamas, Palestinian Islamic Jihad, and Hezbollah.
