Steil Statement on H.R. 8

February 27, 2019

WASHINGTON, D.C.—Today, Bryan Steil released a statement after voting against H.R. 8.

"To reduce violence and protect our community, we must focus on enforcing laws already on the books, ensuring law enforcement has the tools they need to do their jobs, and recognizing and treating the very real mental health issues many Americans face. Restricting the rights and freedoms of law-abiding citizens as proposed in H.R. 8 is ineffective in preventing gun violence."

To help provide law enforcement with effective tools to prevent gun violence, Steil previously announced his support of the Mass Violence Prevention Act. This bill centralizes information sharing and law enforcement efforts between local, state, and federal agencies and supports laws that strengthen criminal prosecutions of firearm related crimes.
