Southeast Wisconsin is home to more than 45,000 veterans. It is critical we support them and their families. Helping our veterans should never be a partisan issue. Our American heroes' service and sacrifice must never be forgotten. I will always work for our veterans, ensure they have access to the benefits they've earned, and work to increase access to health care and mental health resources for veterans and their families.

WASHINGTON, DC – Congressman Bryan Steil (WI-01) introduced H.R. 6323, the Survivor Benefits Fairness Act, legislation to ensure the VA cannot demand the families of beneficiaries pay back their monthly benefits in the event of a surviving spouse's death. Steil's office was contacted by a constituent who received notice from the VA to return survivor benefit payments. This legislation is in honor of the Hessil family and seeks to undo the unfair policy currently in place at the VA.
