Newly elected U.S. Rep. Bryan Steil, R-Wis., spoke of bipartisan cooperation and frustration over the government shutdown during his ceremonial swearing-in on Sunday.

Steil, who represents the 1st Congressional District, which includes Racine County, expressed a desire to resolve the government shutdown, which began on Dec. 22, as soon as possible.

"I'm frustrated," Steil said. "The situation we are in right now is totally unacceptable ... I think what we need to do is have more of a dialogue and come together to resolve this as quickly as possible. I am focused on that."

JANESVILLE (WKOW) — The new Congressman for Wisconsin's 1st District was sworn in at his local office on Sunday.

Republican Rep. Bryan Steil took the oath at a ceremony in Janesville. His mother held the bible for him as he was being sworn-in.

Steil thanked everyone who voted for him for the opportunity to replace Paul Ryan, who held the job from 1998 until he stepped down at the end of last session.

Freshman Congressman Bryan Steil, R-Wisconsin, got a real sense of how serious it is to work in the nation's capital during his first day in office Thursday.

Steil, who now represents Wisconsin's 1st District after it had been represented for two decades by former House Speaker Paul Ryan, was sworn into office at noon eastern time on Thursday and went right to work addressing the partial government shutdown.

Steil was sworn into office on his family's Bible, which he borrowed from his 101-year-old grandmother. His parents and sisters attended his swearing-in ceremony.

Rep. Bryan Steil said ending the government shutdown was at the top of his mind as he took office Thursday.

The Janesville Republican spoke by phone with The Gazette hours before he officially replaced Rep. Paul Ryan as the 1st Congressional District's representative.

"I am firmly committed: We need to reopen the government," Steil said, but he added that will happen when President Donald Trump and the Senate resolve their "logjam" over the question of a border wall.
