MADISON (WKOW) — Congressman Bryan Steil (R) who represents the 1st congressional district weighs in on President Trump's National Emergency Declaration to fund a wall on the southern border.

Rep. Steil said he's frustrated by the President side-stepping Congress to allocate funds through a national emergency to increase border security. The congressman also introduces bipartisan legislation that would prevent government shutdowns.

During the campaign, Republican Bryan Steil said at every stop that he'd come back regularly to the district and meet with constituents.

It didn't take long for Congressman Steil to do just that for the first time, holding two days of listening sessions. These came after the longest partial government shutdown in American history ended and as a threat of another shutdown — or national emergency declaration — looms if Congress and the president can't agree on border security.

Steil opened his Racine constituent offices on Thursday at the Racine County Courthouse, Room 101.

The courthouse houses several different offices including the county executive and district attorney.

SOMERS — Freshman Congressman Bryan Steil, R-Wis., opened a Constituent Service Center Thursday in Somers.

The office, in the Somers Village/Town Hall, 7511 12th St., is where First Congressional District residents can go for help with federal programming or to offer their opinions on public policy.

"I made a commitment to be as accessible and available as possible," Steil said, encouraging constituents to share their views on issues.

JANESVILLE, Wis. (WMTV)— Congressman Bryan Steil held a listening session in Janesville on Monday morning.

"I'm excited to hear directly from those in our community about what's on their minds and how we can improve our government," said Steil.

Sally Fox, Steil's Communications Director, said Steil will hold a listening session in each of the six counties in the First District on Feb. 1 and Monday. The listening sessions are free and open to the people of Wisconsin's First Congressional District.

WISCONSIN — As some federal workers continue on without a paycheck during the month-long federal government shutdown continues, Wisconsin congressman Bryan Steil (R-Janesville) is behind a bill to help members of the U.S. Coast Guard.

Steil is co-sponsoring the Pay Our Coast Guard Parity Act of 2019. This legislation ensures active duty and reserve members of the Coast Guard receive pay on time and in full during the government shutdown.

Representative revives meetings abandoned by Ryan.

Rep. Bryan Steil held his first-ever public listening session in Janesville on Monday morning, showing one major difference from his predecessor as 1st District representative.

Steil's policy ideas did not offer any stark differences from now-retired Rep. Paul Ryan as Steil spoke to an audience of about 40 in the Janesville City Council Chambers.

But Steil's open-to-anyone listening session contrasted with Ryan, who stopped holding such "town halls" during his last three years in Congress.

Newly seated U.S. Rep. Bryan Steil, defended the boarder wall, vowed to protect Social Security and Medicare, and pledged his support for free trade when he met with Kenosha County constituents Monday.

Steil, who held six listening sessions throughout the First Congressional District, told those who attended the one in Kenosha County that he was there to hear from them.

"My goal is to be as accessible as I can," Steil said. "I love hearing what people's thoughts are on policies."
