A Racine man was named First Congressional District Veteran of the Year Thursday while a Kenosha man received the Congressional Recognition of Service award.
U.S. Rep. Bryan Steil, R-Wis., honored retired U.S. Navy Cmdr. Richard "Dick" Vallin as the Veteran of the Year. U.S. Air Force Chief Master Sgt. (Ret.) Brad Behling of Kenosha received the Recognition of Service award.
You don't have to worry about the Veteran of the Year award going to Richard "Dick" Vallin's head.
"I'm deeply honored to accept this on behalf of all the veterans and everybody here," said Vallin, a Racine native, who completed three combat tours of duty in Vietnam. "This is not just about me. This is about the troops."
There are roughly 45,000 veterans in southeast Wisconsin today. But only one of them can be awarded the "Veteran of the Year" award.
